La miniera di sale di Realmonte - The Realmonte salt mine

 

La miniera di sale di Realmonte è ubicata in contrada Scavuzzo a 2,5 km dal centro abitato. L’antichissima Miniera di salgemma, giacimento formatasi circa 6 milioni di anni fa e, adesso, una tra le più importanti miniere della Sicilia, è gestita dalla società Italkali, ed ogni giorno vengono estratti enormi quantità di sale da cucina, sale per uso industriale, cainite ed altri sali potassici.

Ma il vero “tesoro” sta all’interno della nostra miniera e, in particolare, a meno 100 metri sotto la superficie ed a 30 metri sotto il livello del mare. Qui è stata ricavata una chiesa, denominata la “Cattedrale di Sale”, struttura ricavata dagli stessi minatori scolpendo direttamente la roccia salina.

Larga 20 metri, alta 8 metri e con una lunghezza di circa 100 metri, la nostra Cattedrale di Sale non ha nulla da invidiare alle altre per quanto riguarda le sue dimensioni. Inoltre, secondo alcuni esperti, essa presenta un’acustica che supera di gran lunga i più sofisticati Teatri dell’Opera e può ospitare fino a 800 posti a sedere. È proprio qui che viene celebrata, il 4 dicembre di ogni anno, la messa di Santa Barbara, protettrice dei minatori.

All’interno della Cattedrale troviamo varie opere, capolavori scolpiti nelle pareti di sale come i bassorilievi che raffigurano Santa Barbara, la Sacra Famiglia nella parete di destra e Gesù Crocifisso in quella di sinistra. Sono inoltre presenti, all’ingresso, due acquasantiere, ricavate da unici blocchi di sale e altri elementi religiosi, ricavati sempre scolpendo il sale, quali una cattedra vescovile, la mensa e l’ambone con annessi una croce ed un cero pasquale.

Il salgemma, però, offre altre bellezze dovute alla sua natura.

A meno 75 metri dalla superficie è possibile visitare un altro luogo che “ospita” un Rosone formatosi naturalmente dall’incrocio del salgemma con altri sali che formano cerchi concentrici di colori diversi. 

Fino a pochi anni fa, le visite erano consentite solo su prenotazione ed unicamente l’ultimo mercoledì di ogni mese. Non è possibile l’accesso a più persone in quanto, essendo ad oggi la miniera funzionante, interferirebbe con le normali attività lavorative.

Proprio per questo motivo non è sempre scontato prenotare facilmente una visita come in un museo e soprattutto in tempi brevi. 

In ogni caso,  armatevi di molta pazienza e provate a contattare direttamente Italkali.

The salt mine of Realmonte is located in contrada Scavuzzo, 2.5 km from the town. The ancient salt mine, a deposit formed about 6 million years ago. Now, it is one of the most important mines in Sicily, is managed by the company Italkali, and every day are extracted huge quantities of salt for cooking, salt for industrial use, kainite and other potassium salts.

But the real “treasure” is inside our mine and, in particular, less than 100 meters below the surface and 30 meters below sea level. Here there is a church, called the “Salt Cathedral”, a structure made by the miners themselves by directly sculpting the salt rock.

With a width of 20 meters, a height of 8 meters and a length of about 100 meters, our Salt Cathedral has nothing to envy to the others as far as its dimensions are concerned. In addition, according to some experts, it has acoustics that far exceed the most sophisticated opera houses and can accommodate up to 800 seats. It is here that the mass of Santa Barbara, patron saint of miners, is celebrated every year on December 4th.

Inside the Cathedral there are various works, masterpieces carved into the walls of rooms such as bas-reliefs depicting Santa Barbara, the Holy Family in the right wall and Jesus Crucified in the left one. There are also, at the entrance, two holy water stoups, carved from unique blocks of salt and other religious elements, always carved in salt, such as a bishop’s chair, the table and the ambo with a cross and an Easter candle attached.

The rock salt, however, offers other beauties due to its nature.

At less than 75 meters from the surface it is possible to visit another place that “hosts” a rosette naturally formed by the crossing of the rock salt with other salts that form concentric circles of different colors. 

Until a few years ago, visits were allowed only by reservation and only on the last Wednesday of each month. It is not possible the access to more people because, being today the mine working, it would interfere with the normal working activities.

Just for this reason it is not always obvious to book easily a visit as in a museum and especially in a short time. 

In any case, arm yourself with a lot of patience and try to contact Italkali directly.
