Non sono bastati la bellezza dei luoghi e gli appelli social. Quest’anno il titolo di Borgo dei borghi non è andato alla Sicilia e a Geraci Siculo, il borgo in corsa per l’Isola. Resta però al Sud il titolo: in Calabria, con il successo di Tropea, incoronata nella puntata speciale di Kilimangiaro, su RaiTre, condotta da Camila Raznovich.
Tropea batte le isole Sardegna e Sicilia che però salgono ugualmente sul podio: Baunei (comune della provincia di Nuoro nella subregione dell’Ogliastra), arrivato secondo; e il terzo classificato: il borgo di Geraci Siculo, nelle Madonie palermitane.
L’importante non è vincere, ma partecipare. Questo il motto con cui si consolano gli abitanti di Geraci Siculo, che all’inizio – a dire il vero – speravano proprio in un primo posto. “Ci auguriamo di vincere, ma già essere in corsa per un premio così prestigioso ha sicuramente un effetto positivo su Geraci Siculo”, aveva dichiarato il sindaco Luigi Iuppa. “Abbiamo colto in questo nuovo progetto una nuova opportunità, che attrarrà non solo investimenti, ma anche risorse, finanziamenti, un’opportunità di crescita che non può essere tralasciata. Abbiamo aderito a molti circuiti, questo è l’ultimo in ordine di tempo. Dove vediamo un’opportunità di progresso noi siamo sempre in prima linea”.
Geraci Siculo si trova su un colle con una altezza di 1077 metri all’interno del Parco delle Madonie, in provincia di Palermo, in Sicilia. Edificata come colonia greca, successivamente divenne un centro romano e oggi presenta un centro storico con i resti di un castello bizantino, antiche chiese e case in pietra. Il cuore del borgo è Piazza del Popolo, a cui si arriva passeggiando tra strette vie e nella quale spiccano due chiese, quella di Santa Maria Maggiore, al cui interno si trovano diverse opere scultoree e pittoriche, e quella del Collegio di Maria. Da qui si può godere del bellissimo panorama delle Madonie e delle sue campagne. Geraci Siculo è un borgo nel quale prevalgono la pastorizia e l’agricoltura, ma che è conosciuto anche come il centro per l’imbottigliamento dell’acqua minerale che arriva proprio dalle montagne geracesi.
Altre chiese che si possono visitare a Geraci Siculo sono quella di San Giacomo, con all’interno un crocifisso quattrocentesco in legno, una statua del santo, sempre in legno, e un affresco di stile bizantino, e la Chiesa di Sant’Anna con la cappella palatina dei Ventimiglia. Geraci Siculo è rinomata anche per le sue specialità culinarie e i suoi prodotti tipici, tra i quali spiccano la “pittrina ca fasola”, un castrato al sugo arricchito con la tipica “fagiola” verde del luogo, e i “sasizunedda ca addauro”, delle polpette di carne tritate cotte avvolte in una foglia di alloro. Da gustare anche i “maccarruna”, una pasta fresca che assomiglia a dei grandi bucatini. Per quanto riguarda l’aspetto naturalistico il borgo, che fa parte del Parco Regionale delle Madonie, permette agli amanti della natura di ammirare un bosco di sugheri unico nella regione, delle splendide faggete e una serie di canyon con quello di Gonato, il più famoso, che si trova sul versante di Castelnuovo, un’area dove si possono vedere anche degli esemplari di un avvoltoio molto raro, il capovaccaio.
This year were not enough the beauty of places and social appeals, the title of Borgo de borghi did not go to Sicily and Geraci Siculo, the village in the running for the island. However, the title remains in the South: in Calabria, with the success of Tropea, crowned in the special episode of Kilimangiaro, on RaiTre, conducted by Camila Raznovich.
Tropea beats the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, which, however, also climb the podium: Baunei (municipality in the province of Nuoro in the sub-region of Ogliastra), which came second, and the third place: the village of Geraci Siculo, in the Madonie of Palermo.
The important thing is not to win, but to participate. This is the motto with which the inhabitants of Geraci Siculo console themselves, who at the beginning - to tell the truth - were really hoping for a first place. “We hope to win, but already being in the running for such a prestigious award certainly has a positive effect on Geraci Siculo,” had declared the mayor Luigi Iuppa. “We have caught in this new project a new opportunity, which will attract not only investment, but also resources, funding, an opportunity for growth that can not be overlooked. We have joined many circuits, this is the latest in order of time. Where we see an opportunity for progress we are always in the forefront”.
Geraci Siculo is located on a hill with a height of 1077 meters inside the Madonie Park, in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Built as a Greek colony, it later became a Roman center and today presents an historical center with the remains of a Byzantine castle, ancient churches and stone houses. The heart of the village is Piazza del Popolo, which is reached by walking through narrow streets and in which stand out two churches, that of Santa Maria Maggiore, inside which there are several sculptures and paintings, and that of the College of Mary. From here you can enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Madonie and its countryside. Geraci Siculo is a village where sheep farming and agriculture prevail, but it is also known as the center for bottling mineral water that comes from the mountains of Geraci Siculo.
Other churches that can be visited in Geraci Siculo are the Church of San Giacomo, with a 15th century wooden crucifix, a statue of the saint, also made of wood, and a Byzantine style fresco, and the Church of San’Anna with the palatine chapel of the Ventimiglia family. Geraci Siculo is also renowned for its culinary specialties and its typical products, among which stand out the “pittrina ca fasola”, a mutton with sauce enriched with the typical green “bean” of the place, and the “sasizunedda ca addauro”, minced meatballs cooked wrapped in a laurel leaf. To be tasted also “maccarruna”, a fresh pasta which resembles big bucatini. As far as the naturalistic aspect is concerned, the village, which is part of the Madonie Regional Park, allows nature lovers to admire a wood of cork trees unique in the region, splendid beech woods and a series of canyons with the Gonato one, the most famous, which is located on the Castelnuovo slope, an area where it is possible to see some specimens of a very rare vulture, the Egyptian vulture.
