Da quando il padre prese in gestione la trattoria Shangai, affidandogli il banco della milza, Rocky è diventato un'istituzione per Palermo di cui conserva aneddoti e ricordi.

Alla Vucciria, lo storico quartiere nel cuore di Palermo, lo conoscono tutti ed è per tutti Rocky.

Addirittura un documentario di alcuni anni fa ne racconta la storia e lo ha incoronato "il re della Vucciria" - produzione con cui è stato anche candidato al premio nazionale “David di Donatello” - e anche il re dello street food palermitano.

Quando ancora il panino con la milza e la figura del “meusaro” non erano stati innalzati agli altari del “cibo di strada” a livello mondiale - Rocky, al secolo Rosolino Basile, figlio di Benedetto Basile, storico gestore della trattoria Shanghai, era già un maestro del panino più conosciuto nei vicoli della città.

«Il nome Rocky - ci ha detto Rosolino - me lo ha dato mio padre perché sin da piccolo ero un bambino molto vivace ma, a differenza di ciò che pensano in molti, non si ispira al personaggio di Sylvester Stallone, allora sessant’anni fa non esisteva.

Per Rocky, la Vucciria rappresenta la seconda casa, è lì che è cresciuto, tra le balate, una volta sempre bagnate, e i tantissimi commercianti che animavano lo storico mercato.

A iniziare la vendita del panino con la milza al mercato fu mio padre, poi quando prese la gestione della trattoria Shangai lasciò a me e mio fratello il banco della milza e da allora sono rimasto sempre lì».

Fu così che, ad esempio, prima di andare in trattoria il pittore Renato Guttuso passava dal mio banco per un “assaggino” di milza, una specie di aperitivo.

Era molto affezionato a me, ricordo che mi regalò anche uno schizzo di me a lavoro con la scritta "il panino con la milza di Rocky vale un milione”.

«Non ho mai pensato di lasciare il mio lavoro - aggiunge -. In passato ho avuto una carriera anche da calciatore che prometteva di crescere e raggiungere livelli importanti, ma quando sono stato di fronte al bivio di dover scegliere tra stare dietro il banco e calciare, per professione, un pallone non ho avuto dubbi.

E ancora non me ne pento, con questo banchetto ho messo su la mia famiglia con sacrifici e ancora oggi è la mia vita.

"The name Rocky - Rosolino told us - was given to me by my father because from an early age I was a very lively child but, unlike what many think, it is not inspired by the character of Sylvester Stallone, then sixty years ago. did not exist.

For Rocky, the Vucciria represents the second home, it is there that he grew up, between the balate, once always wet, and the many traders who animated the historic market.

My father started selling the spleen sandwich at the market, then when he took over the management of the restaurant in Shanghai he left the spleen counter to my brother and me and I have always been there since then ».

So it was that, for example, before going to a restaurant, the painter Renato Guttuso would pass by my counter for a "taste" of spleen, a kind of aperitif.

He was very fond of me, I remember that he even gave me a sketch of me at work with the words "Rocky's spleen sandwich is worth a million".

"I never thought of leaving my job - he adds -. In the past, I also had a career as a footballer that promised to grow and reach important levels, but when I was faced with the crossroads of having to choose between staying behind the counter and kicking a ball as a profession, I had no doubts.

And I still don't regret it, with this banquet I started my family with sacrifices and it is still my life today.
